Basic Needs Ministry - Violations/Corrections

Basic Needs Ministry failed a pre-partnership food pantry inspection in October 2006. This was amended on November 29 by request. Areas cited were:

  1. Furniture and freezers that held food were 3", not 6" from the wall.
  2. Cases of packaged food were sitting on the carpeted floor instead of on pallets, tables, or shelves in the pantry.
  3. Two empty new freezers did not have thermometers.
  4. There was no trash can with a lid specifically for the food pantry.
  5. Hand wash signs were not posted at eye level in the pantry and in the rest room.
  6. A temperature recording slip was not attached to the front of the freezers.
  7. The freezers did not have identifying numbers on the front.
  8. The refrigerator was not labeled as non-food pantry/personal use only.
  9. Clothing was in the same room as the canned food.
  10. The bottom shelf of a shelving unit was less than 6" from the floor.

The following changes have been completed and we passed a reinspection:

  1. Furniture and freezers that hold food are 6" from the wall.
  2. Cases of packaged food were opened and the food stacked on shelving or on plastic cases.
  3. Four themometers were purchased and placed in each compartment of the freezers and refrigerator.
  4. A 32-gallon trash can with lid and liner bags was purchased and placed in the food pantry for pantry use only.
  5. A hand wash sign was posted in the pantry at eye level and two in the rest room at eye level.
  6. A temperature recording slip was hung beside a freezer, with columns for the four cooling areas and rows for 31 days of each month and we are recording daily temperatures for the freezers.
  7. Identifying numbers were attached to the front of each freezer.
  8. The refrigerator was marked for staff and volunteer use only.
  9. The clean clothing stack and the new donation stack were moved to the open warehouse bays for sorting and hanging. A sign was posted noting the requirement by the Inter-Faith Food shuttle to keep all clothing out of the Food Pantry room. We will appeal the request to keep all clothing out of the room.
  10. The shelving units' bottom shelf was installed or raised so that the food would be 6" off the floor.
