Dress Code Policy
This is how professionals dress. So will we.
Volunteers and community service workers will dress appropriately for the Cleveland Library. The library is a place of business, where volunteers respect the dress code policy and meet the expectations of the community.
Offensive Clothing or Accessories — Clothing or accessories that avertise or depict association with gangs, satanic groups, or cults, tobacco products, alcoholic drinks, or drugs; lewd, offensive, vulgar or obscene writings or pictures are prohibited. May not be derogatory towards individuals or groups of people, or promote or advertise illegal products or activities. No gym or exercise clothing.
Cleanliness of body and clothing shall be expected of all volunteers. Clothes should be clean, neat, and without holes. Clothing should be plain, without slogans, advertising, graphics, or photos. Cleveland Library official wear wiwth advertising may be worn.
All volunteers shall be clean, neat, well-groomed, and use anti-perspirant/deodorant. Hair must be neat, clean, well-groomed, and non-distractive, not obstruct the volunteer’s vision, and worn in a manner that does not endanger the individual.
Blouses, shirts and tops will be sufficiently modest to cover the entire female chest area. Cleavage (a visible line) is prohibited. Clothing will be worn so as to prevent exposure of the skin or undergarment. No spandex, fishnet, revealing tank or tube top, off-shoulder, halter tops, see-through, backless, crop-top, or one-strap shirts or blouses may be worn. Shirts with straps less than 2" in width, spaghetti straps, sleeveless shirts with low armpit openings, or coarse knit garments are not allowed.
The neck opening on any shirt or top will not exceed the equivalent of the second button below the collar of a dress shirt. Clothing will be worn as to prevent exposire of the skin or undergarments. Low armpit openings are prohibited. Sleeveless sweaters must be worn with an undershirt. All shirts or blouses of sufficient length will be worn tucked in. No muscle shirts or fish nets. Shirts must have collar.
Undergarments must be worn and shall not be visible, including bra straps, spaghetti straps, low-cut necklines, or bare midriff. In the midriff area, no skin will be exposed when the volunteer sits, stands, or when arms are raised to shoulder height-no skin should be exposed between upper and lower garment. Tank or tube tops can be worn under shirts.
Skirts, shorts, split skirts, culottes and dresses must fit appropriately, reach the middle of the thigh, and be modest when
sitting or standing. Spandex shorts, pants, tights or leggings must be worn with an outer garment (shorts, dress, or skirt) that reaches the middle of the thigh. No mini-skirts, cut-offs, biker shorts, short-shorts, or pajamas. Capri pants must reach below the knee when in a sitting position.
Pants and shorts must fit appropriately and securely. The pants must stay on, fit securely, and not expose any midriff skin
area. Pant legs will not drag on the floor. Gang-related styles are prohibited. Pants are to be worn at the waist. No sagging baggy pants, hanging belts, showing of boxers, or guys wearing wife beaters. Shorts must be half way down the thigh-equal to or longer than the tip of the volunteer’s longest finger as the individual stands with relaxed shoulders.
Long coats, with length to or beneath knee level, commonly called "trench coats," are prohibited inside the library.
Head coverings — Except for religious reasons, caps, hats, hoods, do-rags, bandanas, headbands, sweatbands, hair nets, head laces, or beanies are prohibited.
Must wear closed toe shoes at all times. No open toe footwear, rubber shower flip-flops, shoes with cleats, house shoes, slippers, or high heels. Shoes must be safe, non-distractive, and stay securely on the foot in an emergency. The volunteer must be able to maintain complete control of his/her shoes.
No sunglasses or nonprescriptive contact lenses are permitted.
Volunteers may not wear chains which are designed to be worn on wallets, pants, or as dog collars, including collars with spikes. No wrist, neck, or waistbands which have raised spikes or studs.
Make-up must be safe, nondistractive and not impair a volunteer’s vision.
Name badges or official ID must be worn, when working.
Radios, CD players, cellphones, pagers and other electronic devices are prohibited on property for community service workers. No calls in or out are permitted. No friends may visit a community service worker.
