Basic Needs Ministry - Serving Liberia's Orphans In 2006, Basic Needs Ministry was asked to provide newborn sleepers and small clothes for orphans in Haiti. Mt. Zion United Methodist Church works with Horne Memorial United Methodist and M.E.R.C.I. Center on projects like this. Due to the Civil War, which ended in 2004, the government abandoned the orphans and had to deal with 1 million people displaced. The education and health systems were devastated. Many times they are cut off from the world and exist on one crop, like barley or raw buckwheat for a month at at time. The Ethica/CII team and it’s associates in Monrovia have identified over 100 individual orphanages just in the Greater Monrovia Area, housing approximately 5738 orphans. You've seen the children and poverty on your television screens. These are all displaced.
