Are evictions a surprise? Sample Eviction Procedure
In 2004, Mecklenburg County had 47,000 homeowners and renters facing eviction. Most paid up, moved up, or made a deal. 6,154 faced eviction. The sheriff's deputy only shows up after an average 45 day processing period. The home owner will have received at least four notices, including a bright yellow note tacked to the door and a letter explaining the locks will be changed in seven days. When the deputy and locksmith arrive, it takes about ten minutes to change the locks. A tenant may remove any or all his possessions during the lock changing. If there is anything left inside after the locks are changed, the tenant will be outside and will have to negotiate with the landlord to get the possessions out.
