Basic Needs Ministry - How to Do Second Sorting

Quality control and sorting of once sorted donations

Check one first sorted box at a time. This is to reduce the clothing in storage, future handling, hanging, and display time. Worek on a table under the "hot lights."

Bad clothing does not look like new so look for any sweat, food, or other body fluid stains or anything like ink or oil spots, any tears, split seams, hems coming out, frayed collars, missing buttons or torn belt loops, broken zippers, missing suspender clamps, age faded material, heat damaged material or elastic, cuts, or anything else not like new. Jeans are the exception, unless wear holes are in the area from the pockets to the crotch or they are overly stained. Bad clothing goes in trash cans and then to the dumpster.

Good shoes (rubber band in matched pairs-both facing front) will not have wear holes, separated soles, peeling plastic color, mold and mildew, or furballs. Underwear (socks should be tucked together-one rolled up in the other) will not have holes, worn elastic, any stains, or wear pills and are put in a tote to take to the appropriate dump bin. . Ties will not have sweat stains, food stains, holes, torn seams, or broken tail holders and are put in a tote to take to the lower bay.

Good housewares, toys, and non-clothing items must be separated from the clothing and incoming donations until someone on staff can price them.

All good clothing items are placed flat in banana or produce boxes as designated by staff and stacked, then they are stacked in the upper bay or container until volunteers are available to place them on display.
